BLUE PLATE SPECIAL

The Blue Plate Special was a low cost basic meal with no options or substitutions. It was said to have originated with the Fred Harvey Restaurant chain (America’s first restaurant chain) in 1892. The meals were served on a porcelain plate divided into 3 sections with a blue Wedgwood  china print.  The popularity of a basic low cost meal spread around the country to diners, truck stops and restaurants, especially during the Great Depression of the 1920’s when millions were out of work.

My version of a Blue Plate Special sign is sold wood and measures 32 inches X 11 1/4 inches. It is all hand lettered in the style of the 20’s and all hand aged on the front as well as the back. It would be at home anywhere food is served!  No mass produced signage here, this is ONE OF ONE, and handmade right here in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
